Interview with GBW Insurance

GBW Insurance, a New Jersey insurance company, has been providing protection to its customers for over 30 years. Glenn K. Tippy, the company’s president, took a few minutes to task with us about the hard work involved in running a successful business.

Mr. Tippy, the insurance market is a very competitive one. Can you share what it is that makes GBW Insurance stand out from the crowd?

GBW Insurance is a mid-size agency working with people to help them get the protection they need. When you reduce the amount of risk in your life, you can focus on your own life and your own business. We suggest risk management techniques and insurance products after we understand what you do and what you want to accomplish. You work hard to succeed, we work hard to protect you. GBW Insurance handles business, home, car, flood, life, and other insurance products to give a very broad range of kinds of insurance and many different insurance companies to choose from. Your commitment to helping your clients sounds like a major part of what makes GBW Insurance special. When did you most feel like you had really made a difference for your clients?

On one of the days after Hurricane Sandy passed, I started answering client phone calls at 4:00 AM, because our communication plan worked. Our insurance company partners were able to start taking claims because their disaster plans worked. Even though they had no power or heat, our staff members showed up because they wanted to help our clients. One of our employees even slept in her car because she wasn’t sure she had enough gas to get back and forth from home to office, but she didn’t tell me because she didn’t want me to order her to stay home. Everyone was being paid whether they showed up or not. Our systems worked and things got better every day, for our staff and for our clients.

That must have been a very busy time for your business. What were your thoughts in the midst of that chaos?

On the day Hurricane Sandy came ashore, I didn’t know for sure what would work and what might not. I could see how immense the damage would be, but I had to wait. I remember wondering if all our folks were okay as trees were coming down around my house and seeing the flooding, but not knowing what would happen to our clients. During the height of the storm, we weren’t able to reach people.

Wow. It’s incredible that you’re able to offer help in circumstances that extreme. What would you say is the most rewarding part of running your own company?

We protect people. When there’s a fire, or a flood, or an accident, when things are terrible, we have the chance to help people who trust us. We can help them fix things that are broken, put up shields to protect them from mistakes, even comfort families after tragedies. Day after day we do little things right, and people benefit. And once in a while huge things happen, and we are there to help.
